Short answer: gutter brightening is the job that finishes a Charleston exterior, because a freshly washed house still looks tired if the gutters read black. The tiger stripes that run down the outside face of a white or light-colored gutter are oxidation - a charged, chalky layer that salt air and acid rain bake into the aluminum - and no amount of ordinary house washing moves them. A house wash cleans the face of the siding and accidentally wipes the top lip of the gutter on its way past; the black runs along the front of the trough are a separate condition with a separate treatment. Why Charleston gutters go black in stripes, and why a wash leaves them
Look down almost any street on the peninsula or across West Ashley and the pattern is unmistakable: the gutter is darker at the top edge where it meets the fascia, stripes down the front of the run, and settles darkest near the seams and downspout outlets. It is not dirt and it is not algae in the same way a green wall is. The result is a powdery oxidation layer that grabs road film, pollen and moisture and holds it there. A pressure wash aimed at the gutter is the wrong tool because it works two ways against you. Brightening is the opposite approach: a chemical treatment designed to lift oxidation, allowed to dwell on the metal, then rinsed at low pressure. It does not just knock the top off the stripe; it breaks the bond so the finish comes back rather than relapses.
What gutter brightening actually includes on a Charleston home
Brightening is exterior work on the face of the trough only, and a proper job is specific about it:
- The outside face of every run is treated - the front of the gutter that faces the street and ties the roofline together. This is the surface that carries the tiger stripes.
- Trim and corners, seams and outlets are worked by hand, because oxidation concentrates exactly where two pieces of metal meet and where water sits the longest.
- Solutions are chosen for the metal. Aluminum gutters take a different treatment than aged copper or painted steel, and we match the brightener to the surface so nothing is etched or stripped.
- The trough itself is not scooped. Clearing debris out of the inside of the gutter so water flows is a separate job, what the industry calls a cleanout, and it is priced separately. We offer it but we do not fold it into a brightening quote.
That last point is where quotes get confusing, and we are deliberately clear about it. Salt, shade and the copper gutters of the historic district
The method is not the same on every house, and Charleston makes that truer than most places. On a modern West Ashley home with white aluminum gutters, the goal is restoring the factory bright white. On the peninsula, a share of the older houses run copper gutters and downspouts, and copper behaves entirely differently: it does not streak black, it weathers to a green patina over time, and brightening is not the right treatment for it at all - patina on copper is a finish, not a stain, and stripping it is neither desirable nor typically wanted. The historic district adds a real constraint. When to do it, and how it fits the rest of the exterior
Gutter brightening is not a once-a-year evergreen on a fixed calendar; it is driven by how the metal actually looks, which is driven by exposure. A house close to the marsh, or one with a long run facing the prevailing wind off the harbor, shows oxidation sooner than a tucked-away inland home. The practical trigger is the same one we use for the rest of the exterior: after the spring pollen has finished falling, check the gutters from the street. If the face has gone from bright to a pattern of dark stripes, brightening is due - and doing it at the same time as a house wash means one trip, one setup, and a visibly finished result.
It also pairs naturally with the other roofline work.
